Wuxi Travel Guide

Wuxi, a land that flows abundantly with countless resources, is located in the south of the Jiangsu Province with the Yangtze River to the north, Tai Lake to the south, Suzhou to the east, and Changzhou to the west. As a famous historic and cultural city, Wuxi is just 218 kilometers from Shanghai and 183 kilometers from Nanjing, and with the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal running through the city. A pearl of the Tai Lake region, Wuxi is famous for its natural scenic spots and cultural relics as well as its folk customs. In 2004, it was named China’s Best Commercial City by Fortune Magazine.

History
A cradle of Wu culture, the history of Wuxi dates back to over 3,000 years ago. In the later Shang Dynasty (1600 B.C.-1046 B.C.), Taibo, the eldest son of King Tai, established a county called Gouwu in Wuxi. Later, Wuxi County was established under the administration of the Kuaiji Prefecture in the 5th year (202 B.C.) of Emperor Gaozu in the Western Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-25 A.D.). With the completion of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in the Sui Dynasty (581-618), commercial activities in Wuxi prospered more than ever and the united Wu culture was formed among the people living in the area. Because oef economic reasons, Wuxi has been known as a land flowing with riches and prosperity since the Ming (1368-1644) and the Qing Dynasties (1616-1911). Today, it is considered one of the Top 10 Tourist Cities in China.

Wuxi covers an area of 4,788 square kilometers, of which the mountainous and hilly areas constitute 782 square kilometers, accounting for 16.8% of the total; the water area constitutes 1,089 square kilometers, approximately 22.8% of the total. The city population reached 4.65 million by the end of 2009. In total, Wuxi administrates 7 districts and 2 county-level cities, namely Chong’an District, Beitang District, Huishan District, Nanchang District, Binhu District, Wuxi New District, and Huishan District. As far as economic strength is concerned, Jiangyin and Yixing under the administration of Wuxi rank No. 1 and No. 6 respectively among China’s Top 10 Economy Cities, and Huaxi Village of Jiangyin is known as “the First Village in the World”.
