Nanjing Travel Guide
Nanjing is located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River with a history of more than 6,000 years, which is the provincial capital of Jiangsu Province as well as the economic, educational center and transportation hub in the East China. There are 6 kingdoms taking Nanjing as the capital since 229 A.D. in Chinese history, and it is honored as “One of the Ancient Cities of China” together with Beijing, Xi’an and Luoyang.
Nanjing first became a capital of Wu Kingdom (222 A.D.-280 A.D.) in the Three Kingdoms Period (220 A.D.-280 A.D.), then the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317 A.D.-420 A.D.), the Song Dynasty (420 A.D.-479 A.D.), the Qi Dynasty(479 A.D.-502 A.D.), the Liang Dynasty (502 A.D.-557 A.D.) and the Chen Dynasty (557 A.D.-589 A.D.) during the South Dynasties (420 A.D. -589 A.D.).
Surrounded by mountains and water, Nanjing is 150 kilometers (93 miles) long from south to north and 70 kilometers (43 miles) wide from east to west, covering an area of 6,597 square kilometers (2,457 square miles) with the city area of 4,731 square kilometers (1,827 square miles), which is called the window to the southeast China and throat of South China and North China.
There are 11 municipal districts and 2 counties in Nanjing, which are namely: Xuanwu, Baixia, Qinhuai, Jianye, Gulou, Xiaguan, Pukou, Liuhe, Qixia, Yuhua and Jiangning District; Lishui and Gaochun County. Nanjing is a multi-ethnic area, and the number of the total population reaches as many as 6.30 million, among whom 5.46 million people were urban residents, and there are 50 minority nationalities inhabiting harmoniously in the city with the Han Nationality, however, the number of the Han Nationality in the city takes up 98.56% of the whole population. There are 289 religious activity places in the city with more than 300,000 disciples, among whom are the Taoism disciples, the Catholic disciples, the Christian disciples and the Buddhist disciples and the Islamic disciples as well.
The topography of Nanjing is very from south to north with the Yangtze River running through the whole city, and the hills in the city covers an area of 64.52 % in the south and the water area covers an area of 11.4% of the whole city, and there are the Qinhuai River in the south of the Yangtze River with 103 kilometers (64 miles) long and the Chu River in the north of the Yangtze River with 110 kilometers (68 miles) long.
