Yinchuan Travel Guide

Yinchuan is the capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and reputed as one of “101 Famous Historical and Cultural Cities” in China. It is located in the upper reaches of Yangtze River, the central part of Ningxia Plain, with Helan Mountain to the west and Yellow River running through from southwest to northeast. Population of Ethnic minorities is over 0.4 million (taking up 24%) with the Hui minority as the majority, giving its very diverse culture.

History

With a long history, Yinchuan is one of the cradles of ancient Chinese civilization. It has people lived in this area as early as the Primitive Society telling from the relics unearthed in this area. In the Spring and Autumn Period (770 B.C.-476 B.C.) and the Warring State Period (475 B.C.-221 B.C.), Yinchuan was a multi- ethnic city with Qiang people, Rong people and the Huns living together. Emperor Qinshihuang ordered to build the Great Wall and Qin Channel in Yinchuan after his unification in the Qin Dynasty (221 B.C.-206 B.C.), and the agriculture economy in this area was rather prosperous in the Western Han Dynasty (206 B.C- 25 A.D.). Prince Liheng ascended the throne in Yinchuan during An- Shi Rebellion in the Tang Dynasty (618 A.D.-907 A.D.), and then it functioned as the transportation hub in the northwest part of China. Xixia Empire was established by Dangxiang People in 1,038. After Xixia’s fall, Ningxia was set up as a province by the Yuan Dynasty (1,206 A.D.-1,368 A.D.), with Yinchuan as capital. It was reformed as the capital of Ningxia Province in 1,958.
