Lijiang has a long history since it has been a political and economic center in northwestern Yunnan. In Han (25A.D.~220A.D.) and Tang(618A.D.~907A.D.) dynasties, it was also an important collecting and distributing center on the Southern Silk Road and the Ancient Tea and Horse Caravan Road. In Shuhan dynasty (221A.D.~263A.D.) ,which is one dynasty in the Three-Kingdom Period), Lijiang was dominated by the royalty as Suijiu Town. Till Yuan dynasty (1206A.D. ~1368A.D.), “Chahan” (official position) was the local governor administering Lijiang. In the early Ming dynasty (1368A.D. ~1644A.D.), Lijiang State (was equivalent to province) was established. In Qing dynasty (1606A.D. ~1911A.D.), it was called "Lijiang Military–Civilian State”. To the 30th year of the ROC period, the 7th Administrative Government-Office of the Inspecting-Commissioners was set up in Lijiang. In December 1949, the Lijiang People’s Government-Office of the Administration Commissioners was established, which was changed into the Lijiang Commissioners’ Government-Office in April 1950, governing 13 towns——Lijiang, Yongsheng, Huaping, Ninglang, Weixi, Lanping, Zhongdian, Deqin, Bijiang, Fugong, Gongshan, Heqing and Jianchuan. In 1953, the Lushui Town was put under Lijiang’s governing, which was divided into two regions——the Nujiang Lisu Nationality Autonomous Country and the Diqing Zang Nationality Autonomous Country, dominated by the Lijiang Special Administrative Area in substitute. This substitute-administration authority was recalled in 1973. The Heqing Town and the Jianchuan Town were put under the governing of the Dali Bai Nationality Autonomous Country. The Lijiang Civic Administration was founded in 1980. Finally, the State Council approved to establish Lijiang City to take the place of the Lijiang District.
