Shenzhen, the first special economic zone in China, is located in the south of the Guangdong Province with Daya Bay to the east, Zhuhai and Zhongshan to the west, Hong Kong to the south, and Dongguan and Huizhou to the north. Shenzhen functions as the window of communication between China and the world, holding the most ports and with the No. 1 ranking comprehensive competitive power among the inland cities of China. Today, it has become a modern international city and regional financial center, information center, commercial center, and transportation hub in Southern China.

History
Shenzhen has a time-honored history of more than 1,600 years where people lived and flourished as early as the Neolithic Age. It functioned as a garrison station for the Baiyue people in the Xia Dynasty (2070 B.C. -1600 B.C.) and the Shang Dynasty (1600 B.C.-1046 B.C.) who lived fishing lives along the sea. Nanhai, Guilin, and Xiang Prefectures were established by Emperor Qinshi in the Qin Dynasty (221 B.C.-206 B.C.), with Shenzhen as a part of Xiang Prefecture, and it was called Bao’an County in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317 A.D.-420 A.D.). It was the transportation hub on the Marine Silk Road in the Song Dynasty (960 A.D.-1279 A.D.), which was abundant in salt, pearls, and spices. Throughout this time, Shenzhen remained functioning as a county named Xin’an County in the Ming Dynasty (1368-A.D.-1644 A.D.), which includes today’s areas of Hong Kong and Shenzhen. As well, it continued its role as the economic center of Southern China during the Qing Dynasty (1616 A.D.-1911 A.D.). Shenzhen got its present name in 1979 and became the first special economic zone of China in 1980.
Shenzhen covers an area of 2,020 square kilometers in total, among which the land area is 1,953 square kilometers and the Shenzhen special economic zone is 327.5 square kilometers. It also administers 6 districts, namely Futian District, Luohu District, Nanshan District, Yantian District, Bao’an District, and Longgang District respectively, realizing regional economic integration in 2010. The Shenzhen Special Economic Zone is 49 kilometers from east to west and 7 kilometers from north to south, with Anle Village to the west, Shenzhen River to the south, Wutong Mountain and Yangtai Mountain to the north, and Dapeng Bay to the east.
Shenzhen is a multi-ethnic metropolis with 56 ethnic groups living harmoniously in the city; the population reached as high as 14.5 million by 2010, among which ethnic minorities reached 0.36 million. Mandarin is widely spoken in Shenzhen although the Hakka language, Chaozhou language, and Cantonese are also primary native languages among the local people.
