As an ancient city with more than 2,300-year history, Datong is abundant in precious historical and cultural relics in the forms of ancient architectures and ancient remains such as grottoes, temples, pagodas and museums as well as marvelous natural sceneries.

  • Yingxian Wooden Pagoda Yingxian Wooden Pagoda:

    As the biggest and the oldest wooden pagoda in China at present, the Wooden Pagoda is located in at the Fogong Temple in the northwest of Ying County of Shanxi Province, built in 1,056 in the Liao Dynasty (907 A.D.-1,125 A.D.), which is the key culture relic under state protection. It is not only the national treasure in Chinese architecture history, but also it is the model of the wood-structured architecture in the world, which is called “one of Three Wonders of the World- Pagodas” together with the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy and Eiffel Tower of Paris in France.

  • Shanhua Monastery :

      Located in the west of Yongtai Street in Datong City, Shanhua Monastery was built in the Tang Dynasty (618 A.D.-907 A.D.) with the initial name of Kaiyuan Monastery. It was renamed by Shanhua Monastery in the Ming Dynasty (1,368- A.D.-1,644 A.D.) after several renovations, which also functioned as a site for the officials to learn the rules of the traditional etiquettes.

  • Hanging Monastery:

    Located on the west cliff of Jinlong Vallay at the foot of Heng Mountain as the key culture relics under state protection, the Hanging Monastery is 65 kilometers (40 miles) from Datong City center, which is the only unique existing Monastery that combines the Confucianism, the Taoism and the Buddhism as one, with the statues of Confucius, Lao-tzu, a Chinese philosopher in the Spring and Autumn Period (770 B.C.-476 B.C.), and Buddha Sakyamuni placed in the same temple.

The climate in Datong is very distinctive with four seasons because it is located on the vast areas of the Loess Plateau: windy and warm in spring, hot and dry in summer, cool in autumn and cold and dry in winter.
