The Mutianyu Great Wall is located in Huairou district of Beijing, 73 kilometers away from the center of Beijing City. This section of wall is one of the most famous along the Great Wall.

Features of Mutianyu

The wall is very unique in its construction. It was built up with closely packed enemy towers and perilous passes. On both sides of walls there are battlements built with. This section of Great Wall connecting to Juyongguan Pass in the west and Gubeikou in the east is the military communication center of Beijing City since the ancient time, and then is known as “Wei Ling Xiong Guan” in Chinese meaning dangerous ridge and impregnable pass.

The Mutianyu Wall processes a critical location in the military and several wars were taken place here, among which the wars in the Ming Dynasty are best known. Most of the wall was built on the edge of the cliff making full use of the mountain with granite, 7-8 meters high and 4-5 meters wide on the top. On both sides of the wall are crenels built to keep the enemy outside the wall.

History of Mutianyu

As early as in the Northern Qi Dynasty about 1400 years ago, wall was built on Mutinayu and on the early Ming Dynasty the wall was rebuilt. And in A.D. 1404 Mutianyuguan Pass was built in the wall. Now the present Mutianyu Wall was built in the Ming Dynasty and is one of best preserved sections of the Great Wall.
