Guangzhou Opera House
Located just beyond the banks of the Pearl River, the Guangzhou Opera House is situated south of the Pearl River New City, Tianhe District of Guangzhou. The magnificent and contemporary structure is reinforced with concrete and steel in the shape of what is called a Round Double-Gravels style; it was designed by the world-famous English architect, Zaha Hadid. The Bigger Gravel features a grand theater, recording studio, and art exhibition hall, while the Little Gravel functions as a multi-functional hall. The total weight of all the steel used in the opera house exceeds 12,000 tons, twice what was used in the construction of the National Grand Theater in Beijing, and it cost 0.85 billion CNY in total.
The Guangzhou Opera House covers an area of 70,000 square meters with a maximum length of 120 meters and maximum height of 43 meters. It is composed of a grand theater (36,400 square meters), ante hall (2,500 square meters), multi-functional hall (7,400 square meters), underground garage (7,500 square meters), and supporting facilities (26,100 square meters). The grand theater can hold a total of 1,800 people and includes over 50 dressing rooms, fully meeting the demands of up to 250 actors putting on makeup and preparing at the same time. In addition, there are 44 piano rooms for carrying out art education and training activities, and 4 rehearsal rooms ideal for rehearsing dancing, operas, drama, and symphonies. The underground garage can hold 270 oversized vehicles at once.
These days, the Guangzhou Opera House is run by the China International Culture & Arts Company. Due to its renowned resources, it has become known as a national-level grand theater and the center of culture in Southwest China, where its influence radiates throughout the Guangdong Province and even into Hong Kong and Macau. The opera house can fully meet the needs of the most large-scale operas, ballets, and comprehensive art performances, making it a symbolic building in Guangzhou not only for its remarkable structural design but also its cultural influence.
