Guiyang Overview

As the capital of Guizhou Province in China, Guiyang is located in the east of Yun-Gui Plateau, which is one of the central cities in the southwest region as well as transportation hub and business travel services center with the name of “the Pearl on the Plateau”. It is the intersection of three railways: Chuan-Qian Railway (from Hunan Province to Guizhou Province), Gui-Kun Railway ( from Guiyang to Kunming City in Yunnan Province) and Qian-Gui Railway (from Guizhou Province to Guangxi Province), which covers a total area of 8,034 square kilometers (3,101 square miles) with the urban area of 2,403 square kilometers (928 square miles).

Guiyang administers 7 districts, 1 county-level city and 3 counties, namely: Wudang District, Nanming District, Jinyang New District, Yunyan District, Huaxi District, Baiyun District, Xiaohe District; Qingzhen City; Kaiyang County, Xiuwen County, Xifeng County. Guiyang is a multi-ethnic area with a total population of 3.93 million, among which 2.72 million people were urban residents, including 23 minority nationalities inhabiting in the city with Han Nationality. The number of the Buyi Nationality and the Miao Nationality rank the first and the second place among the minority nationalities in Guiyang City. Nowadays Guiyang has become an intriguing attraction for the visitors from all over the world with its unique natural sceneries, precious historical relics and traditional folk customs, all of which endow the city with a profound sense of history in the process of its development.

The topography of Guiyang extends from the west to the east with a high altitude in the south and north and low altitude in the middle, and the fantastic Karst landform is distributed in the area in a large scale. There are the high lands and the hills as well as the basins, the terraces and the valleys, with the highest peak of 1,762 meters (5,781 feet) and the lowest altitude of 506 meters (1,660 feet), and the altitude in the center of the city is about 1,071 meters (3,514 feet) above the sea level.
