Haikou Overview

As the capital as well as the transportation hub and business center of Hainan Province in China, Haikou is located in the north of Hainan Island with Qiongzhou Strait in the north and Zengmu Ansha in the south, opposite to Guangdong Province with 18 kilometers (11 miles) across the ocean, which is surrounded by the South China Sea. It is 62.5 kilometers (38.8 miles) long from south to north and 60.6 kilometers (37.7 miles) wide from west t east, covering a total area of 2304.84 square kilometers (890 square miles), among which the urban area takes up 1304.8 square kilometers (503.8 square miles) as well as a sea area of 530 square kilometers (205 square miles) with 131-kilometer (81.4 miles) long coastal line.

Haikou administers 4 districts: Longhua District, Xiuying District, Qiongshan District and Meilan District, and there is the biggest bridge-Haikou Century Bridge connecting Haidian Island and Guomao District at the mouth of Nandu River. The topography of Haikou can be divided into 3 parts: the plain area in the north, the terrace area in the south and east and hill area in the west. The highest peak-Mountain Ma'anling in the city is 222.2 meters (729 feet) high and the even altitude is below 100 meters (328 feet) above the sea level in the city, with the longest river-Nandu River running through the center of the city. Now Haikou is a rather modern city, and it is bestowed with the titles of "the Model City of Environment Protection in China" and "One of Ten Best Greening City in China", which attracts visitors from all over the world to come here for visiting as well as recreation.
