Hohhot Overview

Hohhot is the economic, political, culture and transportation hub of Inner Mongolia. It is located in the central part of Inner Mongolia, north to the Yellow River and south to the Yin Mountain, with an area of 17,224 square kilometers.

Hohhot is composed of the old city and the new city, with a history of 400 years.. The old city was built by Mongolian leader Altan-Khan and his Empress San Niangzi in the 9th year (1,581 A.D.) of Emperor Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1,368- A.D.1,644 A.D.), The new city was built in the 13th year (1,735 A.D.) in the reign of Emperor Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty (1,616 A.D.-1,911 A.D.), Hohhot was named and chosen to be the provincial capital of Inner Mongolia in 1954.

Hohhot administers 4 districts, 4 counties, one banner and one National-Level High-Tech Development Zone, namely, Yuquan, Xincheng, Huimin, and Saihan District; Tuoketuo, Qingshuihe, Wuchuan and Helinge’er County; Tumote Zuo Banner and Hohhot Jinchuan Economic and Technological Development Zone. There are 36 ethnic groups living in Hohhot and making its population as many as 2.61 million. Han people takes up 92% and Mongolian minority takes up 7% of the population.

Topography

Hohhot topography features mountain area in the north (the Daqing Mountain and Manhan Mountain), and the plain area in the south which refers to the Tumochuan Plain. The topography descends from northeast to southwest. The highest altitude is 2, 280 meters and the lowest 986 meters high above the sea level, and the average altitude is 1,040 meters high above the sea level. There are four main mountains line from west to east in the city, namely, Nine- Peak Mountain, Jinmidian Mountain, Panlong Mountain, and the Tiger Head Mountain.
