Kashgar Overview

Kashgar, located in the farthest west part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, borders Taklamakan Desert in the east, Pamir Plateau in the west and Kunlun Range and Ali prefecture in the south, which covers an area of 162,000 square kilometers (62,549 square miles), and it is 1,473 kilometers (915 miles) away from the city center of Urumqi. There are 25 minority nationalities such as Hui and Uygur nationalities inhabiting here as well as Han nationality, 90% of whom are Uygur Nationality people.

Kashgar was an important city along the Silk Road as well as the political, economic and cultural center of the Western Region in ancient times, which is rich in watermelons, grapes, melons, megranates and figs owing to its unique climate and geographical conditions. There are two river systems of the Yarkant River and the Kashgar River with a total annual runoff of 10.9 to 11.9 billion cubic meters.

Nowadays Kashgar has become an intriguing attraction for the visitors from all over the world with its unique natural sceneries, precious historical relics and the hospitable local people, which endows the city with a profound sense of history, and it is called the Pearl in the Western Region.
