Yunnan Provincial Museum

Founded in 8, 1951 in the center of Kunming City, Yunnan Provincial Museum covers a display area of 2400 square meters. As one of China's provincially comprehensive museums, Yunnan Provincial Museum collects multitudinous material objects of anthropology, ethnology and archaeology about Yunnan.

There are 9 departments set in the museum: Storage Department—responsible for storing and protecting collections, Social Education Department-be charged with the publicity of museum to the public, Identification Department-mainly responsible for collection and identification of heritages, Information Department-edit and publish Yunnan Cultural Relics and collect related information, Technology Department-repair and protect the heritages, Infrastructure Department-build the new museum, Cooperation and Exchange Department-responsible for foreign affairs and academic exchange activities, Safety Department-Ensure the heritage in a safe state.
Yunnan Provincial Museum is a 40-meter-tall building of tower style.

The main building has seven stories and the buildings on both sides are three-storied. From the first to the third floor are the exhibition halls covering an area of 4,200 square meters.

Currently, there are more than 190,000 items of historical relics, revolutionary relics, ethnical relics and artifacts collected in the museum. Among the exhibited relics, there are more than 1,000 relics have been identified as previous heritages, for instance, the teeth fossils of Yuanmou Ape-man 17 million years ago, and the bronze wares from Warring State Period to Western Han Dynasty unearthed in Jinning. The most unique historic relics are the bronzes in Dian culture, Buddhist relics of Nanzhao and Dali Period, as well as the colorful ethnic minorities in modern antiques. Bronzes in Dian Culture
As the most important part in Yunnan Cultural Relics, bronze played a very important role in both Yunnan history and the world's bronze history. Centered on the bronze, Yunnan Bronze Culture has a very high artistic level and rich social and cultural connotations. Cooperated with modern exhibition manner, the meaning for this display aims at revealing the deep connotations of Yunnan Bronze Culture; and then shows the resplendent Yunnan Bronze Culture in front of the world.

The Country under the Light of Buddha
Yunnan is the sole naturally religious museum: various temples and shrines are built all over the province; major religions from other provinces or the world seek their own pure land on this magic land. Among them, Buddhism is most representative with broadest impact. From this display, visitors can enrich their knowledge about China Buddhism and other religions.

Treasures Fill the Home
This display can be divided into three sectors: metal craft, jewelry jade carving. The metal craft includes gold, silver and bronze. And the most special treasure is gold-jade earrings from the tomb of Yunnan Chenggongwang. The silver mainly focuses on decorations of minority, for example, Dai Silver gilt inlaid collar, Dai silver arm bands, and Dai silver shawl. Jewelry and jade includes jade, amber, agate, crystal.

Yunnan Provincial Museum is an important base for anthropology study and education of patriotism and historical materialism, and also an ideal place for tourists to understand the history and culture of Yunnan.
