As the birthplace of rice, Yunnan has a long history of rice. At the end of each previous year, every family picked out the best rice to wash and soak in the water and then steam. After being steamed well, people grinded the rice into mushy form and then coated them with beeswax, and finally kneaded them into different shapes with colorful patterns or characters on them. With time passed, this kind of rice product is called "er" by common people.
