Kunming Weather

Kunming locates at north latitude with sub-tropical climate, but there is no summer and no cold winter in most areas of this city. With a typical temperate climate and a reputation of "Spring City", Kunming is famous in China and overseas.

In spring, the weather here is warm and dry with little rain in this season. Fresh breeze and quick evaporation make this city lie in beautifully sunny days, an average temperature of 20 degree Celsius for a month. It is worth recalling that temperature difference during day and night is rather evident in this city. According to this phenomenon, weather here gets a feature of "one-day Four Seasons" -- spring morning, summer afternoon, autumn evening and winter midnight. Therefore, it’s necessary for the honored visitors to take care of themselves basing on changes of the temperature.

Here's no severe hot summer. In this season, it's covered with cloudy and rainy days, adequate moisture moisturizing this "Spring City". In the midsummer, here are averagely two months keeping a summer standard temperature—about 21 degrees Celsius in almost the whole city (except areas with an altitude of 1600 meters). Such appropriate temperature can not be better for your travel in this fascinating city, but please don’t forget to take an umbrella or other rain gears with you all the time.

In autumn, most areas in Kunming keep a temperature of about 18 degrees Celsius, 2-3 degrees Celsius less than that in summer. Besides, the precipitation is just a half of the rainfall in summer. The clear autumn sky and crisp air decorates Kunming as a charming beauty: warm--dry weather makes it get rid of the moisture (in summer) and become a fresh beauty, showing its visitors a comfortable face.

In winter, it's a sharp contrast compared with other southern cities that here's no cold winter, but almost sunny days with abundant sunshine: it keeps about 20 sunny days in each month of the winter. Moreover, the quarterly rainfall covers only 3％～5％ of that in the whole year.

Generally speaking, this city has distinct wet and dry seasons: the rainy months mostly ranges from May to October (85% of annually total rainfall), and the dry months from November to April of next year (15% of annually total rainfall). The average annual temperature keeps about 15 degrees Celsius in the urban district. It's an average temperature of 19-22 degrees Celsius in the hottest month and 6-8 degrees Celsius in the coldest month.

With such good weather, it's suitable for travelling throughout the whole year. However, the best season to visit Kunming are months from 3～10: there are many Yunnan ethnic festivals during these months. Furthermore, there are most fruits and flowers in this period. For this reason, travelling in this season will bring you ultimate pleasure and happiness.
