Hiking from Gandan Monastery to Samye Monastery

Location: Lhasa, Tibet, Southwest China

Route: Gandan Monastery – Heibu Village – Shuga La Mountain Pass – Camping Base – Chitu La Mountain Pass – Camping Base – Chanda Village – Nyuonggo Village – Samye Monastery

Length: 80 kilometers

Duration: 5 days

Level: hard

Best season: April to October

Scenery: This hiking route is located on an average altitude of 4000 meters above sea level, which makes it a hard-level route. Hikers need to climb over two mountain passes Shuga La and Chitu La, which are located more than 5000 meters above sea level. The multivariate mountain scenes, beautiful lakes and rivers, simple villages and Tibetan culture along the way make it one of the most important hiking routes around Lhasa area.

 

Tips:
1. Pack for professional outdoor camping, including tent, sleeping bag, food, compass and walking cane.
2. Hike with a guide and respect the local customs.
3. Snow might fall any time of the year. Prepare winter clothes and raincoats even when you plan to hike in summer.
4. Two nights of camping outdoor is required. Pack enough food.
