Lhasa Overview

Lhasa, located in central Tibet, is the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region. It's also the political, economic and cultural center of Tibet. Lhasa lies above the roof of the world, with an average altitude of 3,700 meters. It is known as the world's highest cities. And the Lhasa River which is the tributary of Brahmaputra runs through its territory. In the centre and south of Lhasa is the middle reaches valley plains of the Lhasa River which has smooth relief and rich soil. Due to high elevation and thin air, very little suspended matter in the atmosphere, the sunshine here is strong and with long sunshine duration which make it known as the "Sunlight City".

It is no doubt that Lhasa is almost one of the most unique and most charming cities in the world. This is not only because it has the height of 3,700 meters above sea level, but also it has cultural heritage and religious atmosphere with 1,300 year-history. According to Tibetan Buddhism and Bon concept,  "Lhasa" is a Tibetan name. "Lha" refers specifically to "god", so the exact meaning of Lhasa should be "place for God". In the previous thousands of years, there have been several times to become political and religious center of Tibet, thus making Lhasa a veritable "sacred place."
