Zhonghua Gate

As the biggest castle-gate of Nanjing ancient wall, the Zhonghua Gate is located in the north of the Changgan Bridge in the south of Nanjing, which was built in the second year (1,369 A.D) during the period of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1,368 A.D.-1,644 A.D.) with its initial name of Collecting-Treasure Gate, and it was renamed the Zhonghua Gate in 1931. It is enlisted as the key culture relic unit under state protection as the best- preserved and most complex castle in the world.

The main features of the Zhonghua Gate

The Zhonghua Gate is 128 meters (140 yards) long from south to north and 118.5 meters (130 yards) wide from east to west with Yuhua Platform as the natural barrier in the south, covering an area of 15,000 square meters (17,940 square yards), which is uniquely built with strict distribution, and the whole architecture is well connected by 3 urn cities and 4 arch gates. The first gate of Zhonghua Gate can be divided into 3 stories with 21.45 meters (70 feet) high, among which the upper story with wood structure was destroyed during the Anti-Japanese War, remaining only the basement; the middle story is brick- constructed with 7 soldier-hiding caves, which could hold more than 3,000 soldiers in the past, and there are teahouses in these caves now; in the middle of the lower story is the passage with 3 soldier-hiding caves on each side. There are 2 stories from the 2nd gate to the 4th gate, all of which are stone- structured on the first story and wood- structured on the second story, and there is a 11- meter (12 yards) wide path in the west and east part of each urn city, which is used for the general to get on the horse and for the to soldiers to deliver arm supplies in the past times. In 1995, the Zhonghua Gate Square was built near the Zhonghua Gate with more than 10,000 square meters (11,960 square yards) green area, building the well- equipped high mast lighting system and the lawn lighting system as well as some bridges, which not only beautifies the environment, but also it improve the transportation conditions in the city. The gate and the square are well connected, each shining more brilliantly in the other's company.
