Located in the southwest of Ningbo, Xikou Town covers an area of 140 square kilometers just 20 kilometers from city center with Wuling Mountain to the east, Shanxi River to the south, Xuedou Mountain to the north, and is surrounded by other various mountains and rivers. As the birthplace of former Kuomintang chairman Jiang Jieshi from the Republic of China (1912 –1949), Xikou Town was named in the first batch of national AAAA-level scenic areas by the National Tourism Administration in 2001. Xikou Town is not only famous in China for its natural landscapes and cultural heritage, but also for its folk customs, especially its Buddhism culture. In particular, the history of Xikou Town is what attracts millions of visitors every year, including party and state leaders from all over the world.
Wuling Gate is the grand and magnificent entrance to the scenic areas. The 3 kilometer long bluestone paved road meanders along Shanxi River with civilian buildings styled from the Ming (1368 – 1644) and Qing (1616 – 1911) Dynasties standing on each side, of which includes the Former Residence of Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-shek), Jiang Jieshi’s (Chiang Kai-shek)Ancestral Hall, the Fenghao Building, the Little Foreign-Style Building, and the Yutai Salt Store, all listed as key culture relics under state protection. Xuedou Temple on Xuedou Mountain was named one of the top 10 most famous Buddhist temples in heaven in the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279), which functions as a famous site where Buddhist rites are performed even today.
Former Residence of Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-shek)
Covering an area of 4,800 square meters, the Former Residence of Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-shek) is centered with a courtyard in a traditional Chinese architectural style with a living room in the front and a hall in the back. Two wing rooms stand in the west and east sides respectively, with 2 Osmanthus trees planted in the courtyard.
Jiang Jieshi’s (Chiang Kai-shek) Ancestral Hall
Jiang Jieshi’s (Chiang Kai-shek) Ancestral Hall is also called Moke Hall, where the ancestors of the Jiangs’ are enshrined. The inside is mainly composed of stone memorial archways, an octagonal pavilion, and tombs. His mother was buried in the solemn hall as well.
Yutai Salt Store
As the birthplace of Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-shek), Yutai Salt Store is located on Jiangqiang Lane where his father once managed a salt business. The main gate is built by stones with two Chinese characters declaring “Peaceful Hut” embedded on the lintel. Now it is part of an architecture cluster with 3 storied houses, 3 bungalows, as well as some accessory buildings.
Located 0.5 kilometers south of Xuedou Temple, Qianzhangyan Waterfall is famous for its majesty and grandeur with a fall of 186 meters. Below the waterfall, a bridge built by ancient people is available for a scenic view from which to watch the waterfall.
