Cemetery of Song Qing Ling

Located in No. 21, on the Songyuan Road of Shanghai, the Cemetery of Song Qing Ling is in memory of Song Qingling-the former Honorary President of the People’s Republic of China, who was born in Shanghai in January the 27th of 1893 and studied in the US in 1908. She followed Dr. Sun Yat-sen when she was young, dedicating herself to the democratic revolution cause all her life, who married Dr. Sun Yat-sen in 1915 and fully supported his revolution cause as his close comrade-in-arms and assistant.

The main features of the Cemetery of Song Qing Ling

Covering an area of 262 square meters (313 square yards), the Cemetery of Song Qing Ling is the solemn remains under state protection in the Wanguo Cemetery of Shanghai, with her parents’ cemetery in the middle and her nursery-maid’s cemetery in the west. The horizontal tombstone is 1.2 meters (1.31 yards) long and 0.6 meters (0.7 yards) wide with the “Song Qingling (1,893-1,981) -the former Honorary President of the People’s Republic of China, built in June 4th of 1981” carved in the middle. There is a hillside behind the cemetery with cypress trees and pine trees around, and many flowers that she likes are planted around the cemetery, for example: the tulips, the rhododendrons, the magnolia flowers and the crape myrtle flowers. In the south part of the cemetery is a memorial square, which can hold more than 1,000 people with an area of 2,880 square meters (3,444 square yards), and a 2.52- meter (8.27-feet) high statue of Song Qingling erects in the north part of the square. There is a memorial monument in memory of Song Qingling standing in the middle of the Lingyuan Avenue, which is built by green and red granites in the body and basement of the monument respectively, and it is 3.3 meters (10.8 feet) high and 5 meters (5.5 yards) wide in sizes. Below the monument is carved the epigraph by Deng Xiaoping, which reads: “The great patriotic, democratic, internationalist and communistic comrade Song Qingling is immortal”, and more than 3,300 words are carves at the back of the monument, recording her glorious life in a direct way.

Besides, there is a display room in the west part of the Lingyuan Road with 6 exhibit halls and one video room in it, introducing the whole life of Song Qingling in the forms of videos, pictures and material objects. There are more than 2,100,000 people visiting the cemetery between 1981 and 1992, which becomes a place for commemorating this great woman for people all over China.

Getting there:

It is located in No. 21, on the Songyuan Road of Shanghai, and you can take a bus No. 48, 72, 73, 113, 141, 224, 709, 754, 806, 808, 814, 855, 909, 911 and 938 to get there directly from the city center. It is open to the public from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm every day.
