Nanjing Road

Nanjing Road in Shanghai is one of the most famous commercial streets in the world. Nanjing Road refers to Nanjing West Road which is 1599 meters long. Along the street, there are all kinds of old and famous shops and department stores, including the four big companies: Yong'an Company, Xianshi Company, Xinxin Company and Daxin Company.

Nanjing Road is a pedestrian street with distinctive characteristic of gathering four functions: shopping, travelling, commerce and culture.

The road is covered by color bricks. The main track is a golden belt made of Indian red granite imported from Italy. On this golden belt, there are 37 lids of rain water catching basins, surface of which are caved with buildings in different period of Shanghai. 

Walking on this street, you will feel quite happy, for you can enjoy the colorful bricks paved on the ground, booths of the same style, and all kinds of fashion shops on both sides. It is enjoyable to see the bustling people, lovely sightseeing cars, the well-designed city sculptures and so on. These have formed modern urban landscapes of Shanghai.

In Shanghai, there are no longer rickshaws, chandleries and advertisement of "Meili Brand" cigarette, and most women do not wear the cheongsam with special hairstyles any more. Even the once famous "Xianshi" department store has changed its appearance. Lots of ancient and traditional Shanghai cultures have already been replaced by the flourishing modern cultures.

One of the most attractive scenic spots in this pedestrian street is the vehicles for sightseeing, consisted of many parts of dapper carriages. There are a lot of fancy patterns on their bodies of carriages, and different carriages have different colors and patterns. Getting on the carriages is as if sitting in toy cars. The carriages can take you to any place as you like and all you have to do is to enjoy the charming scenery of Shanghai.

Tips:
Most of large size shopping stores, in Nanjing East Road, are located near Tibet Road, among which New Century Commercial Building is famous.
