Ocean Aquarium

Located in No.1338, on Lujiazui Ring Road in Pudong New District of Shanghai, neighboring the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is the largest modern man-made ocean aquarium in the world, covering an area of 20,500 square meters (24,518 square yards) in all, which is uniquely designed and well –equipped with high technology, and the rare living creatures in the ocean are displayed in the aquarium, which are from different oceans from all over the world. The aquarium has received more than 1 million visitors from all over the world every year since its opening in 2002, and it is bestowed with the title of “the Popularization Base of Science & Technology” by Shanghai Government.

The main features of Shanghai Ocean Aquarium

The two main architectures of Shanghai Ocean Aquarium are both in the shape of pyramids, and the exhibition theme of the aquarium is “Spanning the Five Continents through the World of the Ocean”, which can be divided into 8 exhibit sections on the whole: Asia Exhibit Section, South America (Amazon) Exhibit Section, Australia Exhibit Section, Africa Exhibit Section, the Cold Water Exhibit Section, the Polar Area Exhibit Section, the Sea Water Exhibit Section and the Deep Ocean Exhibit Section. As a matter of fact, there are 28 large-scaled theme marine life exhibition sections in the aquarium, displaying more than 12,000 rare fish and the endangered creatures of more than 450 species from all over the world, among which the highlights are the numb-fish from South America, the jetting fish from Australia, the penguin from the South Polar and the leaf sea-dragon as well as the poisonous frog, the jelly fish and the moonfish. There is a submarine tunnel with 155 meters long (170 yards), which makes the visitors feel as if they were on the scene, and it is actually the one of the longest submarine tunnels in the world. There is an exhibit section of China, displaying the living creatures in the Yangtze River Area.

Getting there:

It is located in No.1338, on Lujiazui Ring Road in Pudong New District of Shanghai, and you can take a bus No. 81, 82, 85, 583, 774, 795, 798, 799, 870, 961, 971, 985, 992, 993 and 996 to get there directly from the city center. It is open to the public from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm every day.
