Shanghai Art Museum
Located on the Nanjing West Road of Shanghai, Shanghai Art Museum was built in British style as a horserace course in 1933, and the inner part is reformed according to the functions of the museum, preserving its original new-classical style on the whole after renovations and expansions. Now it is a modern and elegant art museum with People’s Park and Shanghai Grand Theater as its back, which has a substantive influence both at home and abroad, and it is well-equipped with high technology. Setting foot on the main hall of the museum, you will have a sense the changing history of Shanghai as well as its intriguing culture when you walk along the stairs of the museum and appreciate the fine works of art in the exhibit halls.
The main features of Shanghai Art Museum
There are 12 exhibit halls in the museum with an exhibit area of 6,000 square meters (7,176 square yards), each of which are well equipped with modern facilities, and it is a very ideal place for holding different kinds of art exhibitions. There are more than 8,000 pieces of art collections in the museum, and many theoretical researches and art museum researches are carried out on the basic of these collections, which are centered with the contemporary fine art history of China, paving way for exhibiting and displaying works of arts as well as international communication in the field of arts. Besides, there are advanced Convention Room, Library and databases of the fine arts in the museum as well, which provide convenience for academic seminars and education; and there are also art gallery, souvenir stores and café bars in the museum, creating a recreational atmosphere for the visitors. Many arts exhibitions have been held in the museum since its opening, for example: the Rural Landscape Painting Exhibition of France in 19th Century, the Painting Exhibition of France in the Past 250 years, the Art Exhibition of Italy in the period of Renaissance and the Painting Exhibitions of Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong as well as some local arts exhibitions, attracting the visitors from all over the world each year.
Getting there:
It is located on the Nanjing West Road of Shanghai, and you can take a bus No. 23, 49, 46, 17, 48, 71, 20, 37, 108, 109, 112, 123, 505 and 506 to get there directly; and you can take the subway Line 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 to get there directly. It is open to the public from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm every day.
