Shanghai People Square is located in the center of Shanghai, which is opposite to the Shanghai Municipal Building, and it was initially a horse-race course for the upper class when Shanghai was just open to the world. As an important landmark of Shanghai, it is the political, economic center and transportation hub as well as tourism center of Shanghai, which is composed of some cultural, tourism and commercial architectures around it in a large sense.People Square

The main features of Shanghai People Square

Covering an area of more than 140,000 square meters (167,439 square yards), Shanghai People Square can hold more than 1.2 million people at the same time. The square functioned as the Japanese barracks during the Anti-Japanese War; it became a club of American Army during the period of Liberation War; the People’s Government took over the horse-race course after liberation and built the People Park, the People Square and the People Avenue here, so the horse-race course has become the present library, and the spectator stands in the horse race course has become the stadium. With the opening and reforming of China and the development of Shanghai in the 1980s, the plan of reforming People Square is on the agenda of Shanghai Government, and the whole project can be divided into 3 sections: the body architectures, the supporting Municipal facilities of Shanghai and the greening construction. The body architectures of the People Square mainly contain: Shanghai Municipal Building on the axis of the People Square, the Subway Station in the northeast, the Underground Commercial City in the southeast, the biggest Underground Substation of Asia in the south, the biggest Parking Lot in Shanghai in the southwest and Shanghai Museum. The supporting municipal facilities of Shanghai remain the granite pavement, which measures 600 meters (656 yards) long and 32 meters (35 yards) wide, and there is a greening isolated island with 5.5 meters (6 yards) wide and a non-motored lane with 6.5 meters (7.1 yards) wide on each side of the Renmin Avenue. The greening construction of the People Square connects perfectly with the People Park, which function as two green lungs of the city, improving the ecological environment of the city greatly.

Now Shanghai People Square turns a new page of the city, which becomes a cultural landscape of Shanghai , attracting the visitors from all over the world each year.
