Chinese Grottoes

The numerous Chinese Grottoes are the best represents of Buddhist religious and traditions of China. My Chinatours lists some oldest Chinese caves with fabulous frescos, statues and stone sculptures.

Dazu Grottoes

In Dazu, Tongnan, Tongliang and Bishan Counties, there is the Dazu Grottoes Tourist Area consisted of a batch of stone statues carved at the Tang and Song Dynasties.  There are more than 70 stone statues and over 100,000 stone bodies with rock carvings in the Baoding Mountain and the West Mountain being the most renowned ones.

Bizalkik Thousand Buddha Caves

As the best-known remains of the Buddihist temple in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Bizalkik Thousand-Buddha Caves is 45 kilometers (28 miles) in the east part of Turpan, standing high on the cliffs of west Mugou Valley beneath the Flaming Mountain, which is just 15 kilometers (9 miles) away from the Ancient Gaochang City.

Longmen Grottoes

Longmen Grottoes, located in the Dragon Gate of Luoyang in He’nan Province, is 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) apart from the urban district, cutting from Northern Wei Dynasty, and it has 2,345 grottoes and over 10,000 statues with 1,500 years history. It together with Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang and Yungang Grottoes in Datong has composed three famous rock caves art treasure.

Tianlongshan Grottoes

There are 24 grottoes with more than 1,500 statues in Tianlong Mountain, which are from the Eastern Wei Dynasty (534 A.D.-550 A.D.) to the Tang Dynasty (618 A.D.-907 A.D.).

Yungang Grottoes

As the best-known historical relics in Datong City, Yungang Grottoes is 16 kilometers (10 miles) in the west suburb of Datong City in Shanxi Province of China, extending 1 kilometer from west to east, which is rich in contents and stately in style. There are 45 main grottoes with 252 niches of different sizes, including more than 51,000 statues of different sizes and shapes, representing the outstanding Buddhist grotto arts of ancient China in the 5th to 6th century. Now it is considered as: “One of the Four Grotto Collections in China” together with Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang of He’nan Province, Maijishan Grottoes in Tianshui of Gansu Province and Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang City of Gansu Province.

Mogao Grottoes

Located on the east part of Hexi Corridor in Dunhuang City of Gansu Province, Mogao Grottoes is 25 kilometers (16 miles) in the southeast of Dunhuang City with 1,680 meters (1,837 yards) long from south to north and 50 meters (164 feet) high, which is famous all over the world for its fantastic murals and colored clay sculptures, and it is bestowed with the title of “the Oriental Louvre Palace” and it is considered as “One of the Four Grottoes in China” together with Yungang Grottoes of Datong City in Shanxi Province, Longmen Grottoes of Luoyang City in Henan Province and Maijishan Grottoes of Tianshui City in Gansu Province.

Tianti Mountain Grottoes

Tianti Mountain Grottoes is very steep with towering peaks above and spiral stone- stairs below, covered with snow on the top of the mountain throughout the year, and it is called “One of the Eight Attractions in Ancient Liangzhou City” (the present Wuwei City).

Bingling Temple Grottoes

Located 35 kilometers (22 miles) on the Little Jishi Mountain in the northwest of Yongjing County of Gansu Province, the Bingling Temple Grottoes is displayed on the steep cliff that is 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) long from south to north with its initial name of the Tangshu Grottoes, and it is considered “One of the Three Grottoes in Gansu Province” as well as “One of the Five Grottoes in China”, which is very grand and splendid above the ground.
