Turpan Overview

Located in the low-lying basin of the central part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, Turpan was an important city with the name of Gaochang along the Silk Road as well as the political, economic and cultural center of the Western Region in ancient times. As the lowest-elevation in China, Turfan covers an area of 15,738 square kilometers (6,076 square miles) with 300 kilometers long (186 miles) from west to east and 240 kilometers wide (149 miles) from north to south, which is very rich in high-quality grapes of all kinds with the name of “the Hometown of the Grapes” owing to its unique geographical position.

Flaming Mountain

There are 23 minority nationalities inhabiting here as well as Han nationality, among which 71% are Uygur Nationality people.

Nowadays Turfan has become an intriguing attraction for the visitors from all over the world with its unique natural sceneries, precious historical relics and the hospitable local people.
