Heavenly Lake

The Heavenly Lake is situated at the descending slope of Bogda Peak of Mt. Tianshan. It is 1,900 meters above sea level, and covers an area of 2 square kilometers. It is an alpine quake lake formed by ancient glaciers and debris flow. Surrounded by snow peaks, the lake got its source from the melted snow. The lake is tranquil and flat as a mirror, reflecting the surrounding mountain peaks. The Heavenly Lake is a famous tourist attraction in Xinjiang, and there are pleasure boats available for tourists. The Heavenly Lake is located in the center of Xinjiang, and comprises three rows of mountains ranges from east to west.

There are many alpine lakes called heavenly lake in China. However, The Heavenly Lake in Xinjiang has to be the most famous one. It is located on the mountainside of Bogda Peak, the highest one of Mt. Tianshan. It is located 110 kilometers away from Urumqi, with an altitude of 1928 meters above sea level. Having long been a famous tourist attraction, The Heavenly Lake was listed as one of the first patch of scenic spots under national protection. The lake is not very big, no more than 5 square kilometers, but the water is clear and azure blue. With a long and narrow shape, the lake is 3000 meters long, over 1000 meters at its widest point, and about 100 meters at its deepest point. Even when it’s summer, the temperature of the lake water is relatively low. While boating on the lake, with cool breeze blowing, visitors will feel the summer heat has been blown away. If you go boating too long on the lake, you will start to feel cold and need to wear a sweater to keep out the cold. Therefore, the Heavenly Lake is an ideal place to escape summer.

The Heavenly Lake backs on Bogda Peak, which is the second tallest peak of Mt. Tianshan. The peak is 5400 meters above sea level, with snow covering the peak all year round. Standing by the lake while watching the snow-capped mountains will give you a unique experience. There are large amounts of spruces planted on the mountain slopes around the Heavenly Lake. The green, verdant and straight spruces look like pagodas, providing very beautiful sight. Clear waters, snowy peaks and verdant spruces form the charming scenery of the Heavenly Lake.
