Wuhan Overview

Wuhan is the economic and culture center as well as transportation hub in Central China, located in the east part of Hubei Province at the confluence of Yangtze River and Hanshui River. In the 8,494 square kilometers (3,280 square miles) administrative area, there are 13 districts (Jiang’an, Jianghan, Qiaokou, Hanyang and Wuchang; Hongshan, Qingshan, Dongxihu, Caidian, Jiangxia, Huangpi, Xinzhou and Hannan) and 3 national development zones (Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone, Donghu High-Tech Development Zone and Wujiashan Taiwanese Investment Zone). Its central area consists of three parts – Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang, hence the name of Wuhan comes.  The total population has reached 9.1 million in the city with Han Nationality people as the majority, among which 5.37 million people are urban residents.

Wuhan City

Wuhan has a recorded history that goes back to 3000 years ago. Druring this time, Hanyang has become a fairly busy port in Han dynast6y. After the second Opium War, Hankou was opened as a trading port according to the signed treaties. In 1911, an armed uprising broke out in Wuchang, which plays an important role of democratic revolution. On November, 26, 1926, the KMT Central Political Committee moved the capital here and combined the Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang into Wuhan city the next year. Much occurred on Wuhan’s recent history, there are numerous events have special significance. The opening of the first Yangtze River Bridge should be on the top list, which makes Wuhan a transportation hub into reality.

Topography

The topography of Wuhan is mainly plain and decorated with mountains in the middle and many lakes in the city. Pingtan Plain is on the banks of the Yangtze River and the Han River, taking up 39.25%>of the whole area, which is the vegetable and cotton production area. Longgang plain is on the transition zone from lakes to plains, taking up 42.56%of the whole area, which is abound in rice and fish. The mountain area takes up 12.32% of the whole Wuhan with an average altitude of 200 meters (656 feet) to 500 meters (1,640 feet) high above the sea level, which are mainly distributed in Huangpi District and Xinzhou District, and the top peak is Shangjian Peak with 873 meters (2,864 feet) high above the sea level.
