Ancient City Wall

Ancient City Wall in Xi'an, located in the center of the city, is built in early Ming Dynasty on the basis of the Imperial City of Chang An of the Tang Dynasty. It has been considered as a symbol of great significance of the famous historic cultural city of Xi'an.

Structure:
Nowadays, the wall stands 12 meters tall, 12-14 meters wide at the top and 15-18 meters thick at the bottom. And it totaled 13.7 kilometers in length with a deep moat surrounding it. On Ancient City Wall, there is a rampart extending out from the main wall every 120 meters. And it has 98 ramparts in all.

There are four city gates on the Ancient City Wall: Changle gate in the east, Anding gate in the west, Yongning gate in the south and Anyuan  gate in the north. Each of them consists of arrow tower and city tower.

The Ancient City Wall of Xi'an includes fosse, pontlevis, gate building, arrow tower, front building, turret building, fighting building, and other military installations; as a result, it has formed a well-organized and complete military system for defending.

History:
The exiting wall was built during the period of the seventh year to the eleventh year of Ming Emperor Hongwu, with a history of over 600 years. It is one of famous city walls in Chinese history in the late medieval. And it is also the most perfectly preserved existing ancient city wall in China.
