Big Wild Goose Pagoda

Big Wild Goose Pagoda, also named “Da Ci'en Temple Pagoda”, is a Buddhist pagoda, located in southern Xi'an, Shaanxi province. With a history of 1300 years, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is 64.5 meters high and has a figure of quadrate cone. It is a rare architectural masterpiece of Buddhist art due to its simple shapes, and magnificent momentum. It is one of the most famous Chinese ancient architectures and has been viewed as the landmark of Xi'an.

There are a lot of legends about how the name of Big Wild Goose Pagoda came from. It is said that it originated from India. Meanwhile, some people hold that it had a relation with the Sakyamuni, or it is related to the legend about Xuanzang’s trip to the west in ancient China.

Big Wild Goose Pagoda has become an excellent model of pavilion -style brick Pagoda in China. This pavilion-style brick pagoda is simple in structure. The body of the pagoda is made from green bricks. On each floor, there are four coupons arches, reflecting the distinctive features of our own nation and our own time. On both sides of the bottom, at the south gate of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, there are two enchased steles. One is the preface for Xuanzang’s translations of Buddhist scriptures by Emperor Tang Taizhong in the twentieth year of Zhenguan’ reign Tang Dynasty. The other one is the record for "preface of Shengjiao” by Tang Emperor Tanggao Zhong. These two steles are considered as important cultural relics that can help researchers do research on penmanship, painting and carving art in the Tang Dynasty.
