Yangtze River of China

As the longest river both in China and Asia as well as the third longest river in the world, the Yangtze River is as long as 6,397 kilometers (3,975 miles) with a long history of more than 7,000 years, and it is just next to the Nile River with 6,695 kilometers (4,160 miles) in Africa and the Amazon River with 6,440 kilometers (4,002 miles) in South America in length, covering a total area of 1,808,500 square kilometers (698,266 square miles) and taking up one fifth of the whole area of China, which is originated from the top peak of the snow-covered Mountain Geladandong in the Tanggula Mountan on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Yangtze River is called the Mother River by the Chinese people together with the Yellow River in the north, which gestates the glorious history and civilization of ancient China, fostering the hard-working Chinese people from one generation to another.

Just like a huge dragon running through China from west to east, the Yangtze River Region is 3,219 kilometers (1,738 miles) long from west to east and 966 kilometers (600 miles) long from south to north, traversing from West Central China to East Central China, which runs across 11 Provincial-level regions from west to east, namely: Qinghai Province, Tibet Autonomous Region, Sichuan Province, Yunnan Province, Chongqing Municipality, Hubei Province, Hunan Province, Jiangxi Province, Anhui Province, Jiangsu Province and Shanghai City. The most areas the Yangtze River flows into are mountain area, and the population along the Yangtze River region is unevenly distributed with the majority living in the central part and east part of the river, where the topography is mainly vast plain. There are many distributaries from the Yangtze River, among which the famous ones are: the Yalong River, the Min River, the Jiangling River and the Han River in the north part of the Yangtze River, and the Wu River, the Xiang River, the Gan River and the Huangpu River in the south part of the Yangtze River. The Danjiangkou reservoir on the middle reach of the Han River is the water source of the South to the North Water Diversion Project.
